MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO, MARINA ABRAMOVIC, MARCEL WANDERS & ROSS LOVEGROVE CONFIRMED FOR GALLERIA ILLY

Galleria illy has revealed the initial schedule of performances and talks for its temporary London exhibition space.

The Galleria will play host to a programme of art, design and food & drink events this September and October.  And while the majority of artists have chosen not to reveal the exact nature of their appearance until a few days before they arrive in London, four ‘must visit’ highlights include:

  • Marina Abramovic meets Patricia Urquiola
  • Marcel Wanders with a special lunchtime design event
  • Questions & Answers with Ross Lovegrove
  • ‘In conversation’ with Carlito Carvalhosa & Hans Ulrich Obrist

Other Galleria participants confirmed include photographer Martin Parr, multimedia artist Paola Pivi and award-winning British architect David Adjaye. Additional literary and artistic contributors will come from the Charta and Corraini publishing houses, both of which illy has a longstanding partnership with.

Michelangelo Pistoletto, who has been invited to provide artistic direction along with Cittadellarte (his Foundation in Italy), will officially open the Galleria [for invited guests & media on Monday 12 September].

Pistoletto and Cittadellarte will contribute a range of works and projects to the Galleria linking London to the Mediterranean and Africa (including the Mediterranean Mirror Table Love Difference).

The Africa connection will be further enhanced by Cameroonian artist Alioum Moussa. Moussa – in conjunction with Cittadellarte - has designed the outfits for Galleria illy’s attendants using second-hand clothes (originally sent to Africa but which turned out to be unsuitable for the climate), hand embroidery and a touch of graphic design.

Artist Francesco Clemente will reveal his take on the espresso cup as part of the illy Art Collection.  His contribution will be added to a new installation that showcases illy coffee cups interpreted by some of the greatest artists and most influential contributors to film and music of our generation, including Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne and Pedro Almodóvar.

Pistoletto’s Cittadellarte will also provide Galleria illy with edible artworks by ‘Love Difference Pastries’: a project that sees artists, confectioners and chefs give people the chance to literally ‘taste’ different cultures through the sweets and pastries they create.

Still on the food & drink theme, the pop-up will also feature appearances from Michelin starred chefs Giorgio Locatelli and Viki Geunes as well as a series of [Dammann Frères] tea, [Domori] chocolate and [Mastrojanni] wine tasting events.

And if all that wasn’t enough, illy baristas from the Università del Caffè will provide free courses to help people master the art of coffee preparation.  The premium Italian coffee maker will be giving all visitors the opportunity to enjoy a delicious and free coffee from a purpose-built London Galleria counter to ensure the coffee-themed aesthetic prevails throughout.

The complete, regularly updated schedule of events will be posted at illy.com/galleria.  You can also follow Galleria developments at facebook.com/illy or @illycaffe on Twitter.
